About this course

The Japanese language is the national language of Japan, with a population of over 126 million people. Outside of Japan, it is possible to find Japanese speakers in nearby countries such as China and Korea. Interestingly, the country with the most number of Japanese speakers outside of Japan is Brazil!

At Oxford Language Academy, we offer a variety of Japanese courses that are sure to meet your requirements in learning Japanese. These include part-time group or private conversational Japanese language classes for adults, corporate language training for businesses and corporations as well as preparatory courses for the Japanese Proficiency Test.

English is used as the medium of instruction. Our conversational courses also use the romanised Japanese alphabet.

In addition to covering simple Japanese dialogue (through the aid of English translations), basic grammar, vocabulary and expressions, the courses will also illustrate interpersonal communication etiquette and formalities on how to address others. Even though this group class emphasises on the speaking aspect of the Japanese language, it also offers a small portion on the writing of Japanese characters.

Levels of Study

There are 10 levels of Conversational Japanese language class – Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, Level 6, Level 7, Level 8, Level 9, and Level 10.

Do note that our courses do not require students to learn the reading and writing of Kanji Characters, and as such, are not complete courses to prepare for the JLPT examinations.

Students requesting direct entry to any course beyond Level 1 must undergo a placement test.

Why Take Group Classes?

The advice from other students and sharing resources will help to ease your learning journey. Additionally, some students find that they are more committed to learning a language in a group setting as compared to a private tutor!

Corporate Language Training

With globalisation bringing people from various parts of the world together, it is crucial for businesses to adapt and be prepared for new opportunities that may come with this change in environment. Customers coming from different parts of the world may not always understand English, which may result in a language barrier between your business and your potential partners or clients.

Corporate language training is one way for businesses to minimize this language barrier. It is a solution for businesses to prepare themselves for the global market by equipping employees with the necessary language skills to be able to communicate effectively with partners and especially customers.

We tailor our programs to provide businesses with practical and useful resources to make the learning more impactful and applicable to your business.

Japanese Proficiency Test

Intending to migrate, study or work in Japan in the future? Individuals interested in getting an accreditation for their Japanese language proficiency should consider taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

Oxford Language Academy offers students taking the JLPT examination, a preparatory course to help them in their studies. In Singapore, the examinations are organized by the Japanese Cultural Society.

We offer private JLPT classes of up to 4 students, hence, the schedule of classes is up to the student’s discretion, but subjected to the availability of our teachers and operating hours of the School.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the official proficiency certification for individuals learning the Japanese language. It is organized by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services.

The examination assesses students’ language proficiency based on 2 components. First, is their knowledge of the Japanese vocabulary and grammar, and the second, is their ability to communicate the language to perform “everyday tasks”. It is the quintessential examination for assessing the ability of non-native Japanese speakers to communicate in aspects of their daily, academic and professional lives.

There are 5 levels of examinations – N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5, with N5 being the easiest level and N1 being the most difficult level.

Syllabus
