About this course

The Level 1 course is for absolute beginners. English is used as the medium of instruction. This conversational course also uses the romanised Japanese alphabet.

In addition to covering simple Japanese dialogue (through the aid of English translations), basic grammar, vocabulary and expressions, the course will also illustrate interpersonal communication etiquette and formalities on how to address others. Even though this group class emphasises on the speaking aspect of the Japanese language, it also offers a small portion on the writing of Japanese characters.

Students will receive a Certificate of Completion upon completion of the course, if they meet the minimum requirements of 70% attendance.

Students requesting direct entry to any course beyond Level 1 must undergo a placement test. Click here to enquire.

Commencement date is tentative and may be subject to change without prior notice.

FAQs

Why Learn Japanese?

The Japanese language is the national language of Japan, with a population of over 126 million people. Outside of Japan, it is possible to find Japanese speakers in nearby countries such as China and Korea. Interestingly, the country with the most number of Japanese speakers outside of Japan is Brazil!

At Oxford Language Academy, we offer a variety of Japanese courses that are sure to meet your requirements in learning Japanese. These include part-time group or private conversational Japanese language classes for adults, corporate language training for businesses and preparatory courses for the Japanese Proficiency Test.

Levels Of Study

There are 10 levels of Conversational Japanese language class – Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, Level 6, Level 7, Level 8, Level 9, and Level 10.

Levels 1 to 5 are approximately equivalent to the Grammar and Vocabulary found in the JLPT N5 Examinations, while Levels 6 to 10 are approximately equivalent to the Grammar and Vocabulary found in the JLPT N4 Examinations. Do note that our courses do not require students to learn the reading and writing of Kanji Characters, and as such, are not complete courses to prepare for the JLPT examinations.

Why Take Group Classes?

An advantage of signing up for our part-time Japanese classes is that it is a great place to meet other like-minded individuals who are just as keen about the language and culture. Classes held are immersive and interactive, enabling students to speak Japanese to one another.

The advice from other students and sharing resources will help to ease your learning journey. Additionally, some students find that they are more committed to learning a language in a group setting as compared to a private tutor!

Prefer a private class? Click here to enquire.

Entry Requirements

There are no minimum requirements for Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs). Foreigners would first be required to go through an interview, to assess their suitability for this course.

Corporate Language Training

With globalisation bringing people from various parts of the world together, it is crucial for businesses to adapt and be prepared for new opportunities that may come with this change in environment. Customers coming from different parts of the world may not always understand English, which may result in a language barrier between your business and your potential partners or clients.

Corporate language training is one way for businesses to minimize this language barrier. It is a solution for businesses to prepare themselves for the global market by equipping employees with the necessary language skills to be able to communicate effectively with partners and especially customers.

We tailor our programs to provide businesses with practical and useful resources to make the learning more impactful and applicable to your business. Click here to enquire.

Japanese Proficiency Test

Intending to migrate, study or work in Japan in the future? Individuals interested in getting an accreditation for their Japanese language proficiency should consider taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

Oxford Language Academy offers students taking the JLPT examination, a preparatory course to help them in their studies. In Singapore, the examinations are organized by the Japanese Cultural Society.

We offer private JLPT classes of up to 4 students, hence, the schedule of classes is up to the student’s discretion, but subjected to the availability of our teachers and operating hours of the School.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the official proficiency certification for individuals learning the Japanese language. It is organized by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services.

The examination assesses students’ language proficiency based on 2 components. First, is their knowledge of the Japanese vocabulary and grammar, and the second, is their ability to communicate the language to perform “everyday tasks”. It is the quintessential examination for assessing the ability of non-native Japanese speakers to communicate in aspects of their daily, academic and professional lives.

There are 5 levels of examinations – N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5, with N5 being the easiest level and N1 being the most difficult level. Click here to enquire.
