About this course

In the Malay Archipelago region in Southeast Asia, a distinct group known as “the Malay people” speak the Malay language. Over the years, the Malay language has been influenced by numerous social and historical conditions, which results in its present language structure and meanings. In present times, the Malay language is politically-defined to nation-state boundaries. Malay language is known as Bahasa Malaysia, and ethnic languages are named according to the states in Malaysia, i.e. Bahasa Malaysia Perak, Bahasa Malaysia Kelantan, etc. Similarly, the Malay language in Indonesia is Bahasa Indonesia.

The Malay language was initially written in an adapted form of the Arabic script, about the time when Islam first arrived in Southeast Asia. However, with the influence of the Dutch and British, the Arabic script was replaced with the Latin script. Hence, students who have a reasonably good grasp of the English language will find it easier to learn Malay.

It is important to note that although Indonesian and Malay may appear similar to individuals unfamiliar with the languages, differences between the languages do exist, mainly in their vocabulary.

At Oxford Language Academy, we offer a variety of Malay courses that are sure to meet your requirements in learning Malay. These include part-time private Malay language classes for adults and corporate language training for businesses.

English is used as the medium of instruction. With the aid of English translations, students will learn Malay dialogue, basic grammar, vocabulary and expressions. It will also illustrate communication etiquette and formalities on how to address others. Even though this class emphasises on the speaking aspect of the Malay language, it also offers a small portion on the writing of Malay characters.

All of our classes are conducted by native speaking Malay Teachers from Singapore. By listening to our Malay teachers enunciate the words, and to imitate them as you learn, it will definitely help you in your articulation of words.

Corporate Language Training

With globalisation bringing people from various parts of the world together, it is crucial for businesses to adapt and be prepared for new opportunities that may come with this change in environment. Customers coming from different parts of the world may not always understand English, which may result in a language barrier between your business and your potential partners or clients.

Corporate language training is one way for businesses to minimize this language barrier. It is a solution for businesses to prepare themselves for the global market by equipping employees with the necessary language skills to be able to communicate effectively with partners and especially customers.

We tailor our programs to provide businesses with practical and useful resources to make the learning more impactful and applicable to your business.
